Let the wild rumpus begin!
When I get older
Losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine?
Birthday greetings?
Bottle of wine?
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me?
Will you still feed me?
When I'm sixty-four?
You'll be older, too,
And, if you say the word,
I could stay with you ....
First verse of the song by the Beatles
Some people make resolutions for the New Year. I'm not one of those people. I make resolutions on my birthday, which is a very good day to have a birthday, by the way. It's just far enough past Christmas that I never got cheated on gifts. And, it's far enough before Lent and Easter, so I never got cheated on gifts. (I still feel bad for those folks whose birthdays fall between December 24 and January 2.)
This year the theme is "When I'm sixty-four."
So, here is a list of the things I will accomplish while I'm sixty-four:
1. Print a book filled with 64 photographs by me. I will title it, "When I'm sixty-four." I hope it will be mostly portraits of people I know, but a few cat and dog photos will probably sneak in there.
2. Whittle my voluminous doll collection down. I have too many, my collecting habits have changed, and it's time to sell and give away at least 64 of them, sending them off to adventures with others.
3. Write 64 blog entries. Sounds easy, doesn't it? There are 365 days in the year, which breaks down to one blog entry every 5.7 days. That's more often than once a week, you know. Sometimes I have weeks go by when I can't think of anything to write about, so this one will be a real challenge. I need a good challenge though, so let's have at it, shall we?
Three things is enough, I think.
Besides, I still have three more days until my birthday!
Let the wild rumpus begin!

"Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high"
~ from 'Porgy & Bess' by George Gershwin
jumping up and down with delight in anticipation of the Integrity Toys Convention in Orlando in November! (Attended my first convention last year in Los Angeles and had the most wonderful time! Wrote about it on my travel blog, here.)
designing a brochure for our network of environmental educators to share with returning teachers in August
crocheting a sock which I have undone three times, so far ... can't seem to get the tension quite right ... yet
dealing with a pulled muscle in my back (ouch! ouch! ouch!)
catching up on the ironing; I'm always amazed how quickly it piles up!
experimenting with salad recipes for summer meals
planning for "Tea with Barbie" in July ... this is our fourth year doing this event; it's been sold out every year and it appears this year will be no exception! It's a delightful afternoon of little girls dressed in their finest fashions accompanied by their moms, grandmothers and aunts and, of course, Barbie!
sorting photos I've shot over the past 7 years along Viele Road, a 1.5 mile stretch of rural road in the middle of a growing metropolitan area that I drive every day on my way to work ... been thinking about making a book. The entire road is a veritable feast for the eyes!

The Pleasure of My Digital Photo Albums
![]() |
Malibu, Californa ~ November 2013 |
I used to print photos and paste them up in albums. That was long before the internet and digital cameras.
Today, I have a cabinet full of photo albums and I'm sure one day, after I've left the planet, my kids and grandchildren may enjoy going through them. Now I take so many photos and there is little time for all the printing and cutting and pasting that would be required to keep up. After all, I have a full time job and like to take pictures. So, I use Flickr.

Mount Dora, Florida ~ September 2010 |
I like to shoot outdoors the best. Mainly because of the natural light. And, I'm here to tell you, we have some of the best lighting conditions available here in sunny South Florida.
Well, except when it rains, of course.
I like to shoot pictures of people, too, but there are lot of people who don't like having their picture taken. I try to respect people's privacy, but humans are definitely my favorite animals.
And, then there's my dolls. I love taking pictures of my dolls and I love looking at other people's pictures of their dolls. It really is an addiction. Fortunately, I am not alone. There are many other doll lovers out there who enjoy taking pictures of dolls. We're a fun group, actually.

My first Poppy Parker Doll, "Coney Island" |
So, here's a sampling of my pictures. The link, above, will take you to my Flickr "sets" page if you're interested. The photos are linked to my Flickr.
Some of them are pretty good for an amature shutterbug, even if I do say so myself.
I hope you'll enjoy seeing them! Cheers!

Happy New Year!
It's here! A new year!
My "to do list" for this year includes ...
taking individual photos of all my dolls, one doll at a time, as an inventory
organizing five years worth of photos a little better, so I can find what I want a little quicker
planning for the future of Art Gallery 21 at the Woman's Club of Wilton Manors
writing a memoir for the AARP contest (due February 15)
deciding when my darling husband and I are going on vacation to Germany
using my sewing machine more often
smiling at strangers every chance I get!
How about YOU?

Pinterest ~ the learning curve
I last posted about my newest "addiction" to Pinterest and, since then, I have forced myself to limit the amount of time I spend on the site. It's really difficult, though. I see the e-mail messages in my "in box" and am drawn to see who is re-pinning from my boards. Then, I visit their boards and, BOOM! I'm off pinning again. {{big sigh}}
For me, pinning has been all about collecting. There. I said it. I am a "collector." I collect fashion dolls in real life. I have an entire room dedicated to them. I created an exhibition of fashion dolls last summer at a local museum and, if you're on Facebook, you can see some of what we did here. I also collect ephemera, which I think stems from my love for the written word. But, back to my collections ... my "boards" on Pinterest.
In the beginning, it was all about the "eye candy." So many beautiful images and I could put them all in one place and revisit them anytime I wanted. "So, what!" you might say. "What good does that do a person?" And, you would be right. For someone like me, pinning images has no socially redeeming value whatsoever. Except, it allows me to organize what I like, and that's important to me!
Prior to joining Pinterest, I collected images from the Internet on my computer. If I saw something I liked, it was as easy as a right-click and "save image as." I have folders titled "Pink" and "Blue" and "Type and Art" and they are full of things I've seen, liked and wanted to return to without having to, again, search for them. Now, I don't have to right-click! I just pin those little babies to one of my boards and enjoy visiting them!
Yesterday, after breaking my own rule about how much time I had spent on Pinterest, I took a closer look at what I was doing. I have 19 boards and they contain 2,787 pins. And, there are 274 "LIKES," which are completely separate from my boards. Now, I'm not quite sure what the logic is behind "liking" something if you can pin it. I'm thinking it's to track those things that don't belong to one of my boards. Of course, there could be some other reason for it, but I haven't a clue what it might be.
My favorite boards at the present moment are "All Things Pink!" and "beige to white and back again." I guess I'm on a color trip here lately. But, I also like my "Type & Art, plain and simple" board a lot, too, and that board has 132 followers after just a few weeks, so I must be doing something right if people are watching what I pin.
And, that's really what it's all about, if you ask me. People have a chance to see how I see things. Why did I include this "blue" image and not that one? What criteria do I follow for "All Things Pink?" These are the questions I ponder when I consider this addiction of mine. And, as the number of my followers grows, I find I am even more critical of my boards. I check them to be sure I haven't pinned the same image twice. If it's pinned to the "Blue" board, it must be all about that particular shade of blue; no pink background; no green or yellow anywhere. It's about pure color and how the image conveys it.
I have become aware of legal issues with Pinterest this week. I was reading on other pinners' blogs about how they use Pinterest, good etiquette on Pinterest and discussions about the impact pinning might have on artists and internet businesses and I stumbled on this. So, now I'm not sure how much longer I'll be doing this. I may have to return to the right-click, "save image as" to keep up my collection madness. We'll see.
In the meantime, happy pinning! I'm going to balance my checkbook now!
